beliefs

As Lutheran Christians we emphasize the three “Solas” (sola is Latin for “alone”).
GRACE ALONE
God loves the people of the world, even though our sin separates us from Him. He sent Jesus, His Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly. We are saved by grace alone. By grace God gives us great gifts that we do not merit or deserve.
FAITH ALONE
By His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who hear this Good News and believe it (faith) have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him.
SCRIPTURE ALONE
The Bible is God’s inspired Word, in which He speaks to us and reveals Himself, His love, and His desire for us to live out our lives in Him.'

Suzy Cleveland
Church Administrator

Suzy has been with Holy Cross since 2006 and considers it a pleasure to serve the congregation as the church administrator. She is married to Greg and they have been blessed with three children. Even before joining the staff of Holy Cross she has always been involved with the church. Youth leader, Children’s ministry leader, are just a few of the hats she has worn over the years.  In her spare time, she enjoys boating and relaxing at the beach.

History

Every congregation has a story and ours began in 1959 with a group of faithful members from Grace Lutheran Church in Downtown Mobile answering the call to work together to plant a new mission church in what was then considered to be “west” Mobile — and Holy Cross Lutheran Church was born! It started out worshiping in an old sanitarium building and later moved worship services to the National Guard Armory. Then on May 7, 1961, a joyous service of dedication was held for our new house of worship at our current location of 3900 Airport Boulevard.

Over the years we have been served by Nine pastors, undergone four building/expansion projects, gathered together to worship the one true God countless times, celebrated many weddings and Baptisms together, mourned at the funerals of the faithfully departed, and marveled at God’s hand at work in all of it. We constantly look forward to discovering what God has in store for us next, and humbly seek His guidance for carrying out His ministry in a way that will bring Him all honor and glory.

Joy in Christ

We are a family of believers connected by the overwhelming love of our God. That love changes us. Without it, we are all very different people from many different backgrounds with many different experiences, strengths, and certainly weaknesses. Together, we are the body of Christ. We are a family. We are a joyful family. We find our joy not in our present circumstance, whether it be pleasant and easygoing, or strenuous and full of suffering. We find our joy in the hope and peace of God who looks at us, and sees His beloved Son. That isn't because we have done so much, made some grand commitment, or were just so great. It was because He sacrificed Himself in our place. So we have Joy! God is for you! God is on your side, and blesses you as family! Come be part of ours as we learn to live in this joy!

Find Joy

We are Lutheran. Being Lutheran is all about the hope and certainty we have in Christ. These things are given to us plentifully in God's Word, and His Sacraments. We find joy in these things, especially in our receiving of them in Sunday Worship because  God tells us that's where we can find Him. And where He is, there is joy!

Enjoy

After receiving this joy in what God offers us, we need regular encouragement as we walk through this life together. We enjoy our time with our family in Christ not only because its a lot of fun, but because we cannot go it alone. We offer plenty of opportunity to grow in relationship together, because we value this bond, and these relationships echo our joy.

Share Joy

We have been truly blessed. Whether God has given you talent, time, or treasure, it is an act of joy to share these things with our neighbor. When we give what God has given us, we recognize who has authority in our lives and this world. That is a joyful thing! The God who gave His own life for you, also creates and sustains everything around us. We take joy in using what we have to be a light to others.
